Health benefits of probiotics

Probiotics are defined as live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host. In our gut there is “good” bacteria and “bad” bacteria, an imbalance means there are too many “bad” bacteria and not enough “good” bacteria. Studies show that the balance or imbalance of bacteria in your digestive system is linked to overall health and disease.

There can be several reasons for having an imbalance of gut bacteria from poor diet, illness, antibiotics, GMO foods, excessive sugar intake, emotional stress and more. So making sure you are getting probiotics the “good” bacteria is important for balance. You can get probiotics through certain fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, tempeh and kimchi.

Studies have been done to link gut health to mood and mental health. Probiotics can improve some mental health disorders. Certain strains such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium taken for 1-2 months can improve anxiety, depression, autism, OCD and memory. Another study taking probiotic supplements for 8 weeks decreased depression levels and reduced levels of C-reactive protein and hormones such as insulin, compared to people who did not take a probiotic.

Probiotics may help keep your heart healthy by lowering LDL(bad) cholesterol and blood pressure. Bacteria breaks down bite in the gut. Bike a naturally occurring fluid mostly made of cholesterol helps digestion. By breaking down bike probiotics can prevent it from being reabsorbed in the gut where it can enter the blood as cholesterol.

Probiotics are shown to promote the production of natural antibodies in the body, and inhibit the growth of harmful hi bacteria. They support healthy GI tract, helps to produce the essential B-vitamins that your body needs to metabolize food and maintain healthy immune system function. Probiotics support normal micro flora in the gut. Gut flora is the complex community of microorganisms in your gut most is found in the colon or large intestine.

As you can see eating foods with probiotics or taking a supplement is vital for many bodily functions mostly importantly gut health. Probiotics can help with maintaining healthy weight as well as helping with irritable bowel syndrome. Also probiotics and gut health have been linked to mental health the benefits are numerous and something as simple as eating some fermented foods can easily get your “good” bacteria back to optimum levels.
