Why did you start the business?
Heidi and I have been in the fitness business collectively for almost 50 years. We saw a need to provide people with the opportunity to receive personal training, with a small group dynamic — at a fraction of the cost. Think about getting 2-3 experienced, motivational and trustworthy trainers for an average of $10 per training session. CrossFit is unique in its ability to challenge and accomplish in minutes what the average workout may take an hour or more to do. We have witnessed a change in client's bodies in two sessions. CrossFit also incorporates a sound, nutritional background that is fundamental and logical.
Is there anything unique about your business that makes it different from the competition?
It's much more than a "fitness class." All my years in the gym business, I have never seen such a supportive atmosphere as I do in a CrossFit gym. Most gyms you enter are either led by an "instructor" or you tackle a workout on foreign machines because you don't want to ask for help, or you can't afford a personal trainer. With CrossFit, you are challenged and amazed at what you can do. Each workout is a surprise and there are no mundane routines. After most sessions, clients hang out and talk. There is a community spirit like no other.
What challenges do you face in business?
The biggest challenge is the intimidation factor. People see the CrossFit website and assume it is too difficult to try. Once they come to a session and realize it's all scalable to their fitness level, they understand. For that reason, we offer free demos to introduce the basics of CrossFit.
